Sanctuary

Acrylic and collage

A trip to Mackinac Island and my love of old buildings, and history, rekindled my art this year. Working the largest I have ever worked has allowed for more of the story.

Where Silence Grows

20” x 20” on wood panel. Framed in natural.

Nearly all of my paintings in 2025 were inspired by the season of loss and grief I was experiencing after my dad had a stroke, and I began the caregiver journey.

Received Honorable Mention award for texture.

When the Wind Fades

20” x 20” on wood panel. Framed in natural.

In the early days after my dad’s stroke, art seemed so far from my capabilities. The best I could muster was to sit on their deck and sketch his windmill and outbuildings. Eventually those sketches turned into this painting.

Exhibited at Holland Area Arts Council - September 2025 - November 2025.

Exhibited at Ottawa Co. Art Trust - June 2026 - September 2026.

$750

Save for Sarah

18” x 18” on wood panel. Framed in black.

My dad and I shared an appreciation of old things. While cleaning out his house, we found old glass jars. On one was a piece of masking tape with the words, “Save for Sarah, Very Old”. I love how my dad always thought of me.

Exhibited at South Haven Arts Center - June 2026 - August 2026. Care Exhibition. It was a great honor to be featured in this exhibition about art and art made by Caregivers.

$600

Halcyon Days

18” x 18” on wood panel. Framed in black.

Inspired from a visit to South Haven, MI and seeing an old department store I had photographed in the past had between torn down. That unleashed research into the loss of the department store as a whole, but particularly in downtowns.

2024 Paintings

House of the Rising Sun

SOLD - 12” X 12”

First completed painting of 2024, following right shoulder surgery in late February 2024.

Since I could only work small, and not really paint yet, I used a lot of collage I had already made before my surgery. I could glue quite well even with my right arm in a sling.

I donated this piece to an art auction for Doors of Hope that I participate in every fall. The lucky recipient took the painting home for a $400 donation.

Flight Path

Sold - 12” X 12” framed in black

Exhibited at ACWL-Nuveen Juried Exhibition March 14, 2025 - April 19, 2025

This piece reminds me of a small airfield near the tip of the Leelanau Peninsula. I have gone there many times when on vacation to photograph. The circular shaped observation deck delights me.

Cottage No. 30

16” X 16” framed in black

Exhibited at KIA West Michigan Area Show - June 2025 - September 2025

One of my very favorite places to explore and photograph are the unrestored buildings of the old Northern Michigan Asylum in Traverse City. I adore the texture of the decaying buildings, the rust, and most of the the architecture.
